Assessment

SCALE Science’s work on performance assessment is grounded in a philosophy that teaching and learning is most effective when instruction is supported by a coherent system of assessments. A critical part of this system is tasks that provide information about students’ thinking that can be used to guide instruction that is responsive to their ideas, needs, and interests.

Our performance assessments follow two models: short performance assessments (SPAs)and instructionally-embedded performance assessments (IEAs). Both types of assessments are part of our model system of assessments.

Follow the links below to view samples of both of these types of assessments. We continue to add more assessments as they are developed, so we frequently update this page.

Short Performance Assessments (SPAs)

SPAs are designed to take one class period. They are used at the end of a unit to assess how students transfer what they learned to a new phenomenon.

Instructionally-Embedded Assessments (IEAs)

IEAs are designed to be used at the end of a unit to simultaneously promote and assess students’ learning. Most IEAs are designed to take ~5 days and feel like a mini-project to students.
